Unusual charming Portuguese village

In Portugal, on the outskirts of the Sierra da Estrela mountain range, lies lonely ancient village of Monsanto. This with its rocky appearance, reminiscent of the Flintstones Land and fascinate every visitor that manages to get to it.

Houses between huge rocks

In order to adapt the rocky landscape, the houses in the village were built so that they are sandwiched between huge rocks or even below them. Stone houses that blend with rocks and narrow streets that connect them, creating truly amazing image of an Flintstone style village. Some of the rocks are even equipped with a door that leads directly to apartment and they are recessed into the rocks.

Museum in the open

Monsanto was in 1938┬áselected for “the most Portuguese village in Portugal”, though, judging by the architecture, it is completely unique and there is nothing typical Portuguese. At that time, Monsanto also announced the open-air museum and its protection as a heritage. Due to construction constraints, the stone village has managed to maintain its original charm, which is slightly heavier to reach with public transport, it is definitely worth seeing in Portugal.
